Clitics and Clause Structure

چکیده
In late Medieval Greek and many modern dialects, pronominal clitics are syntactically adjoined to an IP projection. In another set of dialects they have become syntactically adjoined to a verbal head. In the most innovating dialects (which include Standard Greek) they are agreement affixes. Extending the Fontana/Halpern clitic typology, we propose a trajectory of lexicalization from X clitics via X clitics to lexical affixes. The evolution of clitic placement also reveals the rise of a composite functional projection ΣP.

Clitics and Clause Structure: The Late Medieval Greek System
In Condoravdi & Kiparsky 2001 we traced two paths of grammaticalization in the evolution of Greek clause structure: the reduction of Wackernagel (X) clitic pronouns to word-level affixes via an intermediate stage of word-level (X) clitics, and the emergence of auxiliaries and mood markers as heads of new functional projections. The two trajectories are connected in that the positioning of X cli...
متن کاملCorrelation with Null Objects?
There is a wide consensus in the literature on language acquisition that functional elements are acquired late, although there is crosslinguistic variation with respect to those elements that are produced later and to the rates of omission for different languages (see Radford 1994, Guasti 2002 for relevant data and for a review of the literature). Since pronominal clitics are elements whose syn...

متن کاملClitics, Verb (Non-)Movement, and Optimality in Bulgarian
This paper addresses the issue of whether functional categories head separate projections. In particular, Pollock (1989) claims that auxiliaries head functional projections. I argue here that Bulgarian clitic auxiliaries do not head separate syntactic projections. I further argue that the respective order of Bulgarian clitics and verbs is not the result of syntactic movement (e.g. Long Head Mov...
متن کاملProduction and comprehension of pronouns by Greek children with specific language impairment.
This study contributes to the characterization of the deficit in specific language impairment (SLI) by investigating whether deficits in the production and comprehension of pronouns in Greek children with SLI are best accounted for by domain-general or domain-specific models of the language faculty. The Greek pronominal system distinguishes between acoustically salient and non-salient forms, wh...
